Aikido has it's origins in Daitoryu Aiki Ju Jitsu which was a combat system started in the 9th century and developed further from the 11th century by samurai belonging to the nobility. During the 1920's and 1930's Morihei Ueshiba founded the modern martial art of Aikido from Daitoryu Aiki Jujutsu, developing a non-aggressive defensive art form, which involves the use of locks, throws and atemi strikes leading to co-ordination between mind, body and partner.
